Academic Studies of Sociology – Bachelor in Sociology

Course description:

BA in Sociology will provide you the ability to acquire knowledge of theoretical and methodological foundations of sociology, as well as the particular sociological disciplines. You will be familiarized with all relevant aspects of sociological understanding of modern society, its problems, its course and its development, which means that you will get to shape your degree to suit your own interests and aspirations. Our course helps you to establish modern pedagogical and methodical skills in transferring sociological knowledge, as well as methodological basics and techniques of writing research papers. Also, you will gain interdisciplinary knowledge that establishes mutual relations between sociology and other related sciences (social anthropology, history, theory of literature, theory of art, linguistics, psychology, pedagogy, demography, political sciences).

 

Organisation and Duration of the Studies

Undergraduate studies of Sociology last four years (eight semesters) and each year is organized in two semesters (winter and summer). During this period, students get ECTS credits. In the end of the four-year studies and all exams successfully passed, student accomplishes 240 ECTS points and a degree of Bachelor in Sociology – 240 ECTS.

Students are required to enroll lectures and exercises actively and to collect points in these activities. A specific program of topics for seminar exercises is compiled by the subject teacher and his associates. Following forms of work are subject to evaluation: lectures and exercises attendance, active participation in discussions, essays, tests, seminar papers, research projects and published papers. At the beginning of the academic year, teacher introduces students to topics and questions, forms of work, as well as with scope of points for pre-exam activities. Evaluation of knowledge and activities of students is based on Law, Rulebook and Instruction of Evaluation.

 

Outcomes of the Learning Process

 

At the end of the study, students will have knowledge of basic concepts of Sociology and related disciplines; they will know the key settings of major social theories, as well as main processes in society and actors of social changes. In general, they will be able to describe the most important phenomena and problems, classify them and connect them with related problems and phenomena. Also, students will develop knowledge and use of basic methods and procedures for collecting, systematizing and analyzing data and they will be able to independently expand their knowledge and transfer them to others. The Sociology course at Faculty of Political Sciences gives an opportunity to specialise in two areas that we call General Course and Teaching Course.

 

a) General Course
The General Course in Sociology studies educates students for different jobs that require understanding of social processes and knowledge of the principles of scientific approach to social issues. Students completing the General Course in Sociology studies have been trained to work in the social care institutions, non-governmental organizations and private agencies, state administration, publishing, culture, media, companies and variety of practical areas.

b) Teaching Course
The teaching orientation of sociology studies implies acquiring the teaching competences. Training of this kind is carried out through pedagogical-didactic and psychological subjects and the methodology and practice of teaching sociology. Students completing the teaching course are trained to perform sociology classes and other subjects taught by sociologists in high school.

 

CREDIT VALUES AND THE COURSE CURRICULUM

Values of the subjects are expressed according to European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The total number of credits in each semester is 30, e.g. 60 credits are the equivalent of a full year of study.
