[lijevo]
Survey Centre
The Survey Centre of the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Banja Luka was established in 2016 (SC FPS), with a view to promoting scholarly research at the University of Banja Luka. The Centre is headed by Mr Borislav Vukojevic, MA, a senior teaching assistant. The main activity of the Centre is the Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI), aimed at conducting surveys about public opinion. For these purposes, the Centre is equipped with 8 telephone landlines and the WARP-IT software, provided for free use by the Ninamedia company from Ljubljana (Republic of Slovenia). In addition, the said company provided professional training for our staff as well, and they remain available throughout a survey conducted should there be any request for operative assistance. The surveying process facilitated by this software is semi-automated, with operators being in charge of maintaining communication and filling in electronic questionnaires, and with the software automatically creating a data base containing the results of the survey. This helps reduce the time needed for the survey, at the same time reducing the possibility of any mistakes that might occur as a result of entering the data by hand. It is due to this method and technical capacities that the Centre is capable of offering its services concerning quick market and public opinion surveys to a wide range of clients, from academic institutions and NGOs, over business entities and political parties and subjects, to various other institutions and organisations.
The Politeia Journal
The Politeia Journal was launched by the Decision of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska no. 07.030-053-85-7/11 of 23 May 2011, listed as item 617 in the Register of Publishers and Public Media of the Republic of Srpska. The Politeia is a bi-annual journal, with 19 issues having been published up to date. The Politeia is a multidisciplinary academic journal publishing scholarly papers in the fields of politics, international relations, Balkan studies, sociology, communications, media studies, political systems, journalism, public relations, geopolitics, international security, law, history, cultural studies, social policy, and social work, as well as texts from other fields in the domain of social sciences. As a result of an agreement between the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Banja Luka and the Institute for Political Studies (Belgrade, Republic of Serbia), the Politeia is a joint publishing venture of the two institutions, thus gaining the right of being listed in the Register of Publishers and Public Media of the Republic of Serbia as well. As the only journal in the domain of social sciences in the region of Southeast Europe to be registered in two countries – Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, the Politeia aims at establishing relations between domestic, regional, and international academic circles. In terms of its contents, the Politeia offers the OPEN ACCESS policy, making all the papers available for free to users and their institutions. Users are entitled to read, download, copy, distribute, print, browse or access full-length texts of the papers, as well as to use them for any legal purposes without previously asking for approval from the publisher or author, which is in line with the OPEN ACCESS policy. With regard to its recognition in international reference indexes, the Politeia is indexed, apart from the Scandinavian ERIH PLUS and the CEEOL (Frankfurt, Germany), in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) as well, thus joining the vast community of more than 11,300 journals from 123 countries across the globe. The latter features quality and referent journals, which contributes to the international visibility of the Politeia.

STUDY PROGRAMME OF SOCIOLOGY INTRODUCTION The modernisation of higher education institutions curricula is conditioned by development of science and technology. With regard to this, the reforms undertaken in the spirit of the Bologna Declaration process imply modernisation of professional training of sociologists as well, which was recognised at the Study Programme of Sociology. Thr model set is the profile of sociologist in developed countries, given their position on the market and the form and contents of knowledge to be acquired over the course of their academic studies. In order for any risk of formalisation to be avoided, the reform proposes that certain rules to be introduced that rationalise the teaching process and define the curriculum. For that reason, the Study Programme of Sociology is based upon on general guidelines governing the reform of higher education, in particular on the following: – necessity for greater efficiency of the study process; – necessity of introduction of interactive teaching methods and of active involvement of students into the teahing process; – demand for interdisciplinary studies. The Study Programme of Sociology aims at overcoming the following weaknesses: – outdated teaching methods and outdated and insufficient didactic materials; – long teaching process extending over two semesters, resulting in excessive exam load; – very low efficiency of study process. Students are offered a wide range of knowledge in sociology and an opportunity of becoming a specialist in a certain area, with a view to meeting the needs of various institutions employing sociologists. A more comprehensive knowledge in certain areas is provided by virtue of offering electives that are inextricably associated with the contents featured by mandatory subjects. The curriculum implies the maximum level of operationalisation of interdisciplinary studies. Upon developing the design of the Study Programme of Sociology, the goals were set in a realistic manner, with the actual quality of teaching process, the awareness of the significance of amendments made, and the available resources being taken into consideration. NAME AND GOALS OF THE PROGRAMME Name of the programme: Graduate academic studies of Sociology Goals: It provides theoretical and methodological knowledge that enable students to work as individuals in a certain area of sociology and help them develop critical thinking. By being offered subjects from close social science disciplines, students are provided with a much needed interdisciplinary perspective, with a research paper featuring a range of topics and methods within the selected area. Special emphasis is placed on practical applications of sociological knowledge over the course of secend-cycle studies, aiming at equipping students with necessary skills for positions in schools, social work centres, companies, state institutions, civic and cultural institutions, as well as social phenomena researchers. MODEL OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME The Study Programmes offers a 4+1+3 design of the three cycles of academic studies. SCIENTIFIC FIELD OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME The second-cycle academic studies of Sociology are positioned within the domain of Social Science and in the scientific field of Sociology. TYPE OF STUDIES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Type of studies: Graduate academic studies Learning outcomes: The graduate academic studies of sociology feature a two-semester programme aimed at providing knowledge and skills necessary for individual research work in the respective area of sociology. The theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired through research papers and making of the final paper concern both sociology and similar disciplines. As a result, students are qualified to participate in scientific and applied projects, to perform critical analysis of the social state of affairs, to conduct operational research, and to become involved in designing possible changes to certain segments of society. Specific learning outcomes are defined within the scope of each mandatory and elective teaching subject.

STUDY PROGRAMME OF SOCIOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

The modernisation of higher education institutions curricula is conditioned by development of science and technology.

For that reason, the Study Programme of Sociology is based upon on general guidelines governing the reform of higher education, in particular on the following:

– necessity for greater efficiency of the study process;
– necessity of introduction of interactive teaching methods and of active involvement of students into the teahing process;
– demand for interdisciplinary studies.

The Study Programme of Sociology aims at overcoming the following weaknesses:

– outdated teaching methods and outdated and insufficient didactic materials;
– long teaching process extending over two semesters, resulting in excessive exam load;
– very low efficiency of study process.

NAME AND GOALS OF THE PROGRAMME

Name of the programme: Graduate academic studies of Sociology

Goals: It provides theoretical and methodological knowledge that enable students to work as individuals in a certain area of sociology and help them develop critical thinking.

MODEL OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME

The Study Programmes offers a 4+1+3 design of the three cycles of academic studies.

SCIENTIFIC FIELD OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME

The second-cycle academic studies of Sociology are positioned within the domain of Social Science and in the scientific field of Sociology.

TYPE OF STUDIES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Type of studies: Graduate academic studies

Learning outcomes:

The graduate academic studies of sociology feature a two-semester programme aimed at providing knowledge and skills necessary for individual research work in the respective area of sociology.

METHODOLOGY AND DURATION OF STUDIES

The studies are realised as a full-time activity, organised at the seat of the Faculty and following the 4+1+3 design, with the first cycle lasting for 4 (four years), that is, 8 (eight semesters), and the second one for 1 (one) year, that is, 2 (two) semesters. The latter figure refers to the third cycle (doctoral studies), to be launched soon.

With regard to the teaching process, there are following forms applied: regular lectures and practical exercises. Upon completion of the first cycle, students can choose between two study courses at the second cycle: Political Science Studies and International Studies, each featuring five mandatory subjects and one elective, as well as the final paper, on the basis of which candidates choose their field of expertise.

Students at this study programme are obliged to actively participate in lecture and exercise classes, to submit essays, seminar papers, and research projects, as well as to give presentations and be engaged in other academic activities, for which they are awarded points. At the beginning of a semester, the professor in charge of the subject introduces topics and issues, methodology and forms of work, and credits awarded to particular activities that make up of the overall subject workload. The passing grades range from 6 to 10 in a 5-10 grading system, the former being the lowest and the latter the highest grades. With regard to the aforementioned, the grades of 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 are awarded for the respective point ranges: 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, 81-90, and 91-100. The grade of 5, marking a failed exam, is awarded for scores below 51.

The second-cycle studies last for 2 (two) semesters. In order for an MA in Political Science Studies or an MA in International Studies to be acquired, candidates are required to complete the 60-ECTS workload, to pass all the exams, and to publicly defend their master’s thesis.

A researh paper in the field of public policies is mandatory over the course of the studies.

On 27 March 2009, the Faculty of Political Sciences came into existence as one of the 18 member units of the largest university in the Republic of Srpska by splitting up from the Faculty of Philosophy of four study programs that used to function as three-year study courses comprising 180 ECTS. Upon the split-up, the newly formed study programmes were successfully re-licensed into four-year ones of 240 ECTS, under the respective names of Political Science, Sociology, Journalism and Communication Studies, and Social Work. In order for the identity and full affirmation of the Faculty to be achieved, it was necessary to provide adequate working conditions, which was realised in 2013 by erecting a building that met all the requirements of the Bologna Declaration standards. The funds for the building were secured through the engagement of Mr Milorad Dodik, the then President of the Republic of Srpska, and the Government of the Republic of Srpska. The building comprises one lecture hall with 250 seats, 13 classrooms and a banquet hall, as well as 38 offices for members of staff. In addition, there is a 70-seat computer room, a library, the Registrar’s office, a conference room, a students’ bookshop, with a cafe in the main hall. The holdings of the library contain over 7,000 titles. With reference to these, the textbooks, monographs, and the bulk of other academic titles were donated by the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Belgrade and major publishers from Serbia, such as the Official Gazette and the Institute for Textbooks and Didactic Material, with the Faculty investing much of its own resources for these purposes as well. As far as the second cycle academic studies at the Faculty are concerned, they were launched in 2011, with the third cycle following in 2017. In 2013, the Institute for Social Research was established within the Faculty, offering opportunities for the best graduate students to pursue their scholarly interest by participating in national, regional, and international projects. Up to date, there have been 2,017 students enrolled, of whom 1,062 have graduated at the first cycle, 426 at the second cycle, of whom 69 have obtained their master’s degrees, with 14 candidates currently studying at the third cycle.

Organisational chart of the Faculty of political sciences The Faculty of Political Sciences, as an organisational unit of the University of Banja Luka, consists of four study programmes (Political Science, Sociology, Social Work, and Journalism and Communication Studies) as sub-organisational units, with the Institute for Social Research of the same status. Each of these sub-organisational units forms its respective council that makes decisions and formulates proposals within its legal and statutary competences. All legal, human resources, accounting, publishing, administrative, technical, and other affairs are executed by the respective administrative services of the Faculty, coordinated by the Secretary of the Faculty. The management of the faculty consists of the dean, vice-deans for Education and Research and Publishing Affairs, councils of respective study programmes, Teaching Staff Council of the Faculty, and the Board of the Faculty, which has an advisory role. As far as the students of the Faculty are concerned, they are assembled into three organisations: Students’ Organisation of the Faculty, Students’ Club of the Faculty, and Union of Social Work Students. In addition to this, in 2017 the Faculty saw the establishment of a debate club, through which students are offered an opportunity to improve and master their skills in the culture of dialogue and rhetoric. Finally, the building provides all the necessary conditions for a modern-age educational concept and is fully adjusted to the needs of disabled persons. [desno][/desno]

On 27 March 2009, the Faculty of Political Sciences came into existence as one of the 18 member units of the largest university in the Republic of Srpska by splitting up from the Faculty of Philosophy of four study programs that used to function as three-year study courses comprising 180 ECTS. Upon the split-up, the newly formed study programmes were successfully re-licensed into four-year ones of 240 ECTS, under the respective names of Political Science, Sociology, Journalism and Communication Studies, and Social Work. The Faculty shared the hardships of the Republic of Srpska, still suffering from the political and social aftershocks of the 1992-1995 civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and dealing with the challenges of globalisation and transition. The world was going through a great economic crisis, followed by demographic upsets, migration crisis etc. For its part, the Faculty struggled with numerous issues concerning its own development – in the first place, the lack of staff and room. Initially, classes took place on the premises of the Faculty of Philosophy, Law, and Philology respectively, as well as some others. The lack of staff issue was tackled by filling the gaps with renowned visiting professors, mostly from the University of Belgrade. With their aid, a new generation of professors and teaching assistants appeared, so that the number of employees at the Faculty today is 65, of whom 40 are members of staff (two professors emeritus, eight full professors, twelve associate professors, ten assistant professors, and eight teaching assistants). In order for the identity and full affirmation of the Faculty to be achieved, it was necessary to provide adequate conditions, which was realised in 2013 by erecting a building that met all the requirements of the Bologna Declaration standards. The funds for the building were secured through the engagement of Mr Milorad Dodik, the then President of the Republic of Srpska, and the Government of the Republic of Srpska. The building comprises one lecture hall with 250 seats, 13 classrooms and a banquet hall, as well as 38 offices for members of staff. In addition, there is a 70-seat computer room, a library, the Registrar’s office, a conference room, a students’ bookshop, with a cafe in the main hall. The holdings of the library contain over 7,000 titles. With reference to these, the textbooks, monographs, and the bulk of other academic titles were donated by the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Belgrade and major publishers from Serbia, such as the Official Gazette and the Institute for Textbooks and Didactic Material, with the Faculty investing much of its own resources for these purposes as well. On the observance held on the occasion of opening the new building, Prof. Nenad Kecmanovic, PhD, the first dean of the Faculty, said that he perceived the Faculty as an ‘intellectual hub’ of not only the academia, but of the whole of the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Indeed, the Faculty is obliged to contribute to forming personalities in terms of scholarly capacity and morality, which represents the greatest capital of any country, the Republic of Srpska included. It can exert a lasting influence on society by nurturing and developing critical thought and intellectual excellence, by inspiring ethical modesty in the generations to come, and by guarding peoples’ idealism and destiny. Bearing in mind that Plato said that states looked like the people inhabiting them, it is up to the profiles educated at the Faculty, whose mission is to serve as a spiritus movens of society in terms of directing and interpreting social processes, to outline the future of the Republic of Srpska. Although boasting of a much shorter history than its counterparts from the former Yugoslavia region, the Faculty has managed to become a recognisable and equal competitor in the field, fulfilling the highest criteria of values and knowledge acquired. This is recognised across the very same region, so the Faculty attracts numerous candidates from the aforementioned countries each year. Furthermore, experience so far tells us that there is a great number of graduates from the Faculty who continued their education at various institutions and non-governmental sector, with many of them having no trouble enrolling in second cycle studies at renowned universities in Europe. {gallery}istorijat_fpn{/gallery}
